Beat The Bug Part 3: Learning Your Immune System

Posted by Jessica Sims on

The immune system is the body's main defense mechanism against infections. It has the ability to recognize our own cells, while destroying foreign cells or microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. While the immune system generally does a good job of keeping us healthy, it cannot help us out as well whenever it is weakened. That is why this post and the next will focus on different ways we can boost our immune systems. But first, let's talk about some factors that weaken the immune system:

Immune System Weakeners

  • Dehydration
  • Lack of Excercise
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Poor nutrition
  • Poor hygiene (or too much, we'll discuss later)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Smoking tobacco
  • STRESSSS!!!! ( we will definitely discuss later!)

I'm sure some of you read that list and figured, "Man, so that's why I'm sick all the time!". The truth is many people are sick, not from diseases, but just from the lack of self-care. With the exception of smoking and consuming alcohol, everything else on the list is something we must maintain and ensure we are taking care of. If we let ourselves go, it may take time to get back on our feet. But that is why we are here. To share ways to build yourself up after a fall and to do so in way that isn't overwhelming. So with so many things affecting our immune system, how can we build it back up? Put simply, it is through diet, exercise, proper nutrition and hydration, adequate sleep, and minimal stress. But to make it easier for you, we are going to touch on a few of these points and provide tips in the next post called "Boosting Your Immune System" .
